"Fall in love, stay in love and it will decide everything." [ Fr. Pedro Arrupe S.J. ] What is guiding your decisions these days? Repost from @mr.fuchila 2021 Year-end Reflection |
Farina Amarone Dinner Party At ZingariFarina Wines is a four-generation family winery in Valpolicella Classica, near Verona, with more than 100 years of history. Today it is run by the fourth generation, Claudio and Elena Farina, who have modernized the winery while maintaining its traditional Amarone identity. About 70% of production is exported. Farina is interesting for the balance between tradition and the evolution through technology. Farina still embraces the classic Valpolicella technique of appassimento—drying grapes before fermentation—but its newer drying facilities precisely control temperature, humidity and airflow. Their Amarone is therefore not simply about richness. The winery emphasizes a balance between maturity and freshness, purity and elegance, which is a useful way to distinguish Farina from Amarone producers whose wines lean extremely extracted or sweet-fruited. Maria Mosconi is Farina's Export Manager. She joined the winery in 2018, initially assisting Claudio Farina before becoming Export Manager. Her background includes laboratory work, the Soave wine consortium, events, sommelier training and several years at Signorvino. Farina talks about tradition evolving. Maria is passionate about sharing how and where the winery has deliberately stayed traditional, and where has technology genuinely changed the character of the wines. The wines to know are Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, Famiglia Farina Amarone, Montefante Amarone Riserva, Mezzadro alla Fontana Amarone Riserva, Alessandro Valpolicella Superiore, and Montecorna Ripasso Superiore. Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is the classic expression (70% Corvina, 20% Rondinella, 10% Molinara). The grapes are dried for roughly 90 days, losing about 40% of their weight, then the wine spends significant time in wood and bottle. Famiglia Farina Amarone is particularly interesting historically. It was launched in 2015 as a recreation of Farina's celebrated 1968 Amarone, using an intentionally more old-school style alongside modern winemaking technology. Montefante Amarone Riserva is one of the winery's flagship expressions. Mezzadro alla Fontana Amarone Riserva is another top-tier wine and part of Farina's Quintessential Valpolicella Classica Luxury Edition. Alessandro Valpolicella Superiore and Montecorna Ripasso Superiore are good wines to know if you want something less powerful than Amarone.
