Andreas Tscheppe Chardonnay 2017. Salamander, Sudsteiermark, Austria. Andreas’ vineyards teem with life, in fact this a wine named for the small lizards that roam between the rows and act as a sort of natural insecticide. There’s certainly a richness here, but one entwined with floral aromatics and lingering acidity. Andreas Tscheppe, alongside brother Edwald at nearby Werlitsch, is at the forefront of Austria’s new wave of winemakers. His vineyards, in the south-eastern region of Styria on the border of Slovenia, explode with life every vintage and his wines, befittingly perhaps, are often beautifully wild.
